Douglas Brings New Awareness To Oral Sex & Throat Cancer

NEW YORK (CBS News) — Actor Michael Douglas’ publicist is backing away from a report about what caused the actor’s throat cancer.

Michael Douglas said in an interview with The Guardian his throat cancer was caused by human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease.  However, shortly after the interview was published Monday, a representative for Douglas denied The Guardian’s headline.

Despite the confusion, the actor’s interview has raised awareness about the medical concerns over oral sex and a connection to throat cancer.

Douglas, the 68-year-old star of the new Liberace biopic “Behind the Candelabra,” told The Guardian he did not regret his drinking and smoking habits in light of his cancer battle because his disease was caused by oral sex.
